Humana is one of the largest health insurance companies in the country and serves more than 13 million people. It’s also one of the many insurances we accept for recovery treatment. In fact, several different policy plans are available through Humana, each including different stipulations and covered services.
Most Humana policyholders have coverage for addiction treatment. However, it’s important to note that the type and amount of coverage vary between specific plans. If you or a loved one would like more information about Humana addiction treatment coverage, contact our staff at Vertava Health Ohio at 844.954.1771.
Humana Addiction Treatment Coverage
Mental health care resources and addiction treatment resources are offered through Humana Behavioral Health, a subsidiary of Humana. Some of the services provided by Humana Behavioral Health include:
- Treatment and care coordination
- Access to providers, including Vertava Health – Ohio
- Patient advocacy
- Case management services
- 24/7 help
- Federally mandated and state-mandated confidentiality
- Assistance with concerns and questions
As for paying for rehab, Humana insurance covers recovery treatment depending on individual plan details, where the policyholder lives, the type of treatment in question, and legal requirements.
Inpatient Treatment Coverage
It’s important to note that many plans offer the option of adding a separate substance use coverage plan if the original insurance plan does not offer that type of coverage. To cover expenses, they must be medically necessary.
Treatment options that Humana often covers include:
- Inpatient rehab programs
- Inpatient detox programs
- Prescription medications
Most Humana plans require policyholders to pay co-pays for some services, which, like other plan terms, varies according to the specific plan a policyholder has.
Most plans also require that policyholders reach their deductible, which is a set amount of money that a person must pay during a specified amount of time (usually one year) before Humana will cover the rest.
It’s also important to note that although Humana rehab insurance coverage usually only covers in-network facilities, coverage is not limited according to geography. In other words, a patient doesn’t have to stay local in order to cover treatment.
Outpatient Treatment Coverage
For the most part, Humana addiction treatment coverage for outpatient services is almost the same as coverage for inpatient treatment. However, outpatient treatment is often less expensive, so treatment may not have the same impact on your deductibles with Humana.
Vertava Health Ohio offers many treatment options and modalities for outpatient rehab that Humana often covers, some of which include:
- Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs)
- Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs)
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
- And others
Outpatient prescription drug treatment coverage is also usually covered by Humana—at least in part—when those medications are medically necessary, as with many detox programs and plans.

In addition to Humana, we also accept many other types of insurance. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires that every insurance company provide some level of coverage for alcohol and drug rehab treatment.
It also requires that mental health inpatient services, treatment for substance use disorders, and behavioral health treatment be covered.
If you have questions about paying for rehab, Humana insurance provides a phone number on the back of your insurance card to connect you with a representative who can then help you. In addition, the Humana website (www.humana.com) also provides many answers and additional contact information.
Our compassionate staff can file claims with Humana and help iron out coverage details for our patients. If you would like more information about Humana rehab insurance coverage, or if you need help with anything else regarding substance use treatment, contact Vertava Health Ohio at 844.954.1771.
